1 Executive summary

Bottom line: a solid 5-iron that found the target. 166 yds total, 156 carry, 106 mph ball speed, finishing 25 ft from the 159-yd flag. It curved 19 ft left and landed at 38°, so it released ~10 yds.

The swing is quick and athletic: ~0.50 s backswing, ~0.32 s downswing, hips that hold their depth, and a held finish. The one pattern from all his irons is strongest here: the head drops about 6 in by the time the lead arm is parallel and ~7 in by impact. With a long iron that costs ball speed and keeps launch high (19° vs 14° LPGA).

Strength

On target

25 ft from a 159-yd flag, solid strike, balanced finish held while he watches the ball.

Priority 1

Stay tall early

The dip happens in the first 0.2 s. Keep the cap on its line through the takeaway.

Priority 2

Lower launch

Hands ahead at impact: 19° down to ~15° turns height into carry with a long iron.

★ first 5-iron with a proximity reading. Club speed isn't on the screen: at a long-iron smash of ~1.36–1.40, 106 mph means about 76–78 mph. Curve direction read from the brighter arrow (left). LPGA/PGA: classic TrackMan Tour averages (5-iron).

What it means: almost a copy of his October 5-iron (−2 mph, −3 yds), so this is his stable 5-iron: LPGA-level speed, but launched ~5° high and landing ~5° shallow, so it runs. Same speed with ~15° launch should give ~160–162 yds carry and a steeper landing.

3 Timing & tempo — measured from the video

30 frames per second, so each time is accurate to about ±0.03 s. Takeaway starts at ~30.95 s, the club reaches the top at ~31.44 s, and impact is at ~31.75 s.

GroupBackswingDownswingRatio
André (5-iron #2, Nov 4)~0.50 s~0.32 s~1.6:1
André (5-iron #1, Oct 2)~0.53 s~0.28 s~1.9:1
André (8-iron #1, same session)~0.50 s~0.28 s~1.8:1
PGA Tour (Tour Tempo, "24/8")~0.80 s~0.27 s3:1

Tour figure: John Novosel, Tour Tempo. Frames: takeaway 74, top 89, impact 98–99.

What it means: his rhythm is consistent across clubs, quick back and quick down. A slightly longer, smoother backswing (~0.6–0.7 s) would bring the ratio toward 2.5:1 and give the body time to rotate without diving toward the ball.

4 The reference frame — how this swing was measured

Reference frame
  • Grid: each square is about 5 inches (~7.5 px per inch at the golfer), scaled from his hip-to-ankle length, so treat distances as ±1–2 inches.
  • Vertical center line (light green): the head's address position. Horizontal lines: cap height (white) and hip height (light green) at address. The white box is the head at address.
  • Two corner diagonals (green): a fixed perspective scaffold for depth.
  • Paths: the red trail is the head and the yellow trail is the hands, frame by frame from address to impact. The red circle is the ball's address spot (already gone in this frame).
  • Body points were tracked automatically on every frame (180 frames, 28.5–34.5 s), head height was measured from the top of the cap, then checked by eye at each key position. The camera is fixed.

Impact frames
Club sole

Left: impact close-up (frames 97–100): ball at rest, clubhead at the ball, ball gone. Right: the sole shown to the camera after the swing, a clear "5" with no bar under it (on his clubs only the 6 and 9 have the bar).

6 Position-by-position biomechanics

Club: 5-Iron, read on the sole in the video. Logged as report #2.

Photo 1 — Address Good

  • Athletic posture, weight centered, hands just ahead of the ball.
  • Ball a little forward of center, a normal 5-iron spot.
  • Stable over the ball: the cap moves less than 1½ in in the 2 seconds before takeaway (better than in the 8-iron clips).

Photo 2 — Takeaway Watch

  • A connected start, hands and chest together.
  • But the cap is already ~3½ in lower after only 0.2 s: the dip starts with the first move.

Photo 3 — Lead arm parallel Watch

  • Lead arm parallel at ~0.33 s, wide and on plane.
  • The cap is now ~6 in below its address line and moving toward the ball: the biggest early dip of the three swings from this session.

Photo 4 — Top Good

  • Full turn, club near parallel at the top (~0.50 s backswing).
  • The head rises a little (~3½ in below address) and sits ~4 in toward the ball.
  • Hips ~2 in back from the ball: they keep their depth.

Photo 5 — Arm parallel (down) Good

  • Hands drop in front of the chest; the lower body leads.
  • The head starts working back down into the strike.

Photo 6 — Impact Head down

  • Clubhead at the ball at ~31.75 s; one frame later the ball is gone.
  • The cap is ~7 in lower than at address and ~1½ in toward the ball.
  • Hips back at their address depth (no early extension), ~1 in higher.
  • Hands ~2 in ahead of their address spot.

Photo 7 — Ball launched Good

  • The ball is already airborne within 1/30 s: solid strike (106 mph ball speed).

Photo 8 — Release Good

  • Arms extend toward the target; the chest keeps rotating.
  • The head starts to come up only after the ball is gone.

Photo 9 — Finish Excellent

  • Full, balanced finish on the lead side, trail toe up, held while he watches the ball.

7 Same session, three clubs

Club (Nov 4)CarryTotalBall speedLaunchHead drop at impact
5-Iron #2156 yds166 yds106 mph19°~7 in
8-Iron #2123 yds126 yds94.0 mph23°~4½ in
8-Iron #1122 yds125 yds93.5 mph22°~6 in

The 5-iron flies ~33 yds past the 8-iron, about 11 yds per club, which is healthy long-iron gapping. Across all three swings the head drop is the common thread: every club launches 4–5° above the LPGA window.

8 Diagnosis

  1. Fast, early head dip (~6 in by lead arm parallel, ~7 in at impact): the largest of the session. It adds loft and makes the 5-iron launch high and land shallow.
  2. Hips hold depth: no early extension, a consistent strength.
  3. Tempo ~1.6:1: quick and repeatable.
  4. Contact and aim: solid strike, 25 ft from the flag, 19 ft of curve left.

9 Next steps — keep it simple

1

Quiet takeaway

First 2 ft of the backswing with the cap still: turn the chest, don't bow toward the ball. 10 slow takeaways, then full swings.

2

Hands ahead

Feel the hands over the lead thigh at impact. Target: 14–16° launch with the same 106 mph.

3

Pick a flag

Keep using a target (159 yds here): proximity is the best scorecard for a 5-iron.

10 Limitations & next capture

Confidence: high on ball flight, club ID and tempo; moderate on head and hip distances.
